Welcome to ourgreatsandy.com: a website devoted entirely to the Great Sandy Strait — one of the great natural wonders of the world!
Stretching between the western fringes of World Heritage Listed Fraser Island and the south-east Queensland coast, our Great Sandy is a watery wonderland. Its beauty and unique ecology attract thousands of tourists annually. Most of its eastern side lies within the Fraser Island World Heritage Area. It is listed under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Significance and is also one of Australia’s most important nesting sites for migratory trans-equatorial shorebirds. The list goes on.
So why does it need saving?
In 2006 the Queensland Government announced plans to dam the Mary River; a system upon which the strait depends to sustain its complex ecosystem. Damming the Mary will create devastating consequences for our beloved Sandy—and we refuse to let that happen! We invite you to explore this magical place with us and be inspired to help protect it for the generations to come.
