What is the GMA?The GMA is a non-profit association which formed with the initial aim of opposing the building of a dam on the Mary River. Following intensive research, GMA members believe the construction of the proposed Traveston Crossing dam would cause degradation of the Mary River, Great Sandy Strait and Ramsar wetlands, and eventually Hervey Bay. It would also deplete native species populations and damage associated industries, from tourism to recreational and commercial fishing.
The GMA will work towards the development of a whole-of-catchment plan for the Mary River and adjacent coastal area and communities, both large and small, while collaborating with other associations working with the same objectives.
Becoming a member of the GMA is easy. Click here to register. Mission Statement:
To respond to government plans which will impact on communities and natural resources, by involving community members and competent, multidisciplinary expertise, to help create more balanced strategies which will achieve desirable socio-economic and environmental outcomes through the sustainable use of natural resources. |
