Celebrating and Defending the Great Sandy Strait

The complex environment of the Great Sandy supports an abundant variety of animal and plant life, many of which is rare, vulnerable or endangered. Dugong, three species of dolphin, and six of the world’s seven marine turtle species inhabit the strait. It is also home to the mysterious ‘Illidge’s ant-blue’ butterfly, false water rats, and yearling eastern curlews which do not migrate in their first winter.

Six species of seagrass grow here, as well as patterned fens, which are rare in Australia and have not previously been recorded in subtropical regions of the world. The area is also the northernmost limit for subtropical mangrove communities, and this gives the strait a biogeographical significance.
